Studies have revealed that non-smokers exposed to cigarette smoke in the workplace have an increased lung cancer risk of twenty to thirty percent.  In fact, in 2006, the US Surgeon General’s report on secondhand smoke reached the conclusion that, “[t]he only way to fully protect non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke indoors is to prevent all smoking in that indoor space or building.  Separating smokers from non-smokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot keep non-smokers from being exposed to second hand smoke” (United States Department of Health and Human Services).

Indeed, numerous businesses and establishments are choosing to ban smoking from their premises, as managers realize that in doing so they are not only reducing the health risks for employees and customers, but also improving other areas of business.  Prohibition of smoking reduces the risk of fire on premises, and decreases the legal liability of an establishment.  It also works to raise cleanliness both by reducing litter and increasing the purity of the air, especially important in locations where food, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and precision instruments are manufactured or prepared.  In addition, businesses that ban smoking will ultimately reduce their spending on energy due to decreased need for ventilation.
